Tar Heels to Final Four! ….sort of

The train kept rolling as UNC handled a feisty UAB on Tuesday night, or at least a feisty Elijah Millsap.

Despite coughing up 15 turnovers and — arguably — the team’s best shooter, Will Graves, going 0-9 from the field, the Heels were in control of the Blazers and won 60-55. No last-second heroics needed, Larry.

That didn’t stop Drew II from putting in some clutch free throws, as well as knocking down a couple of treys to seal the deal. John Henson matched a career-high in points and Deon Thompson turned in his first double-double since November. The Heels will face the winner of Virginia Tech and Rhode Island in Madison Square Garden for the semi-finals of the NIT.

It might not be the NCAAs, but man, has it been awesome to watch this team finally come together. The youngsters seem to be hitting on all cylinders, while the veterans are playing to keep their careers going — looking at you Thompson and Ginyard.

Deon and Marcus might feel a little let-down from their senior year, but there is a bright side to their sudden burst in hustle. They could make history as the first team to ever win the NCAA and NIT in consecutive years.  While admittedly it underachieves what many thought was this team’s capability, I guess UNC just can’t go through a season without making some kind of history.

Oh, yeah. Congrats on reaching the 2,000 win plateau, boys!

The match-up in NYC is a fun one, regardless of who wins between VT and RI tonight. Why? Well, if Virginia Tech wins, the game will be against an ACC foe with whom Carolina split its games this year. If Rhode Island wins, it will be a match-up of teams with the same colors.

Personally, I’d like to see the RI game. That way the Heels could win on two levels: score and style.

Carolina Has Opportunity to Dethrone Devils

I was more excited for last night’s game between Maryland and Duke thanI’d ever been for a non-UNC basketball game. Honestly, I daydreamed about it during work.

As much as Greivis Vasquez makes me want to throw my TV, I was just waiting for he and the Terps to stick it to the Dookies and have their rude fans hurl insults that would make Ari Gold cringe.

And much to my delight, that all happened. Every last part of it. Vasquez hit essentially the game-winner and I distinctly heard chants of “F*** You, Scheyer.”

The best part of last night? The result put the Gothic Goonies in a tie with UMD for first place in the conference, and both teams have one game left on their schedules — Duke’s last contest is UNC. That means the Heels have the chance to save their season on Saturday by denying Duke the regular season conference title, assuming that Maryland beats Virginia.

What better way to cap an end-of-season win streak than crushing the hopes and dreams of your arch rival? The Heels haven’t exactly dominated in the past two games, but their gritty efforts will serve as good practice for playing Duke, which usually results in a gritty game anyway. They seem to be understanding team effort much better as well. John Henson pointed this out after the Miami game.

Playing in Cameron will be tough, but Greg Paulus will tell you it’s also tough to beat UNC when they’re hyped up for a game in Durham.  And adding the prospect of dethroning the devils has me (and likely the Tar Heels) daydreaming again already.

UNC to Wear 25th Anniversary Jordan Uniforms and Silver Jordan 2010s Against FSU

John Henson just tweeted this and got me pumped. New uniforms and kicks for the team tomorrow. Check out the shoes as well.

This is what D-Wade wore in the All-Star game. And yes, that circle in the middle is clear.

Here’s another view of the shoe not still-in-the-box fresh.

Update: This may or may not be said jersey.

    Want UNC-Duke Basketball Tickets?

I believe UNC alum from the past four years will recognize that note. It reads as the gospel to those who worship in the house that Dean built.

I am lucky, as for the second year in a row I have been awarded the honor so many seek. Praise unto thee.

I will be on hand to see one of our patron saints take his place among the greats.

I will bear witness to the battle between the heavens and hell.

I will cease to be man, and become one with something much larger than myself.

I will not leave without victory.

And you, humble reader, will be able to follow along on my journey.

Didn’t mean to do that to you, but I figure you understand.

I did not lie, I will be at the game. And I’ll make sure to keep everybody updated along the way.

Make sure to check in with TheRafters on Twitter all game day as well as next Thursday for video and commentary.

    Bologna Sandwiches Anyone?

I hope everyone got to read last week’s quote by Roy about what he plans to do to motivate the Heels for tonight’s up coming game against NC State. If not here it is, in all it’s glory:

“I’m bringin’ the dadgum guys in Friday night, watchin’ Hoosiers, Rocky III, making bologna sandwiches.”

A friend of mine had a guest column today in the Daily Tar Heel that I liked and thought I’d share. Enjoy.

Movies UNC should watch to escape early ACC “Hangover”

    By Brandon Staton

By now, most of you have heard North Carolina coach Roy Williams’ newest Roy-ism.

After Wednesday’s 82-69 loss to Wake Forest, Williams compared this season’s struggles to those of his first year at Kansas, when the Jayhawks went through a stretch in which they lost eight in a row.

“I’m bringin’ the dadgum guys in Friday night, watchin’ Hoosiers, Rocky III, making bologna sandwiches,” Williams remembered mandating for the Kansas team.

“If I have to start frickin’ doin’ that, I’m experienced at it right now.”

Hoosiers? Rocky III? C’mon, some of these guys weren’t even born when those movies came out.

That got me thinking: I wonder which movies Williams would pull out of the vault to help hype his Heels before tonight’s game at N.C. State University.

Here are a few that could get their competitive juices flowing:

    The Notebook

The story: Boy meets girl. They get separated and everything falls apart, only to reunite and find love once again.

-The Tar Heels meet star recruit (John Wall) at basketball camp. It’s love at first sight, a match made in heaven.

-UNC goes off to Detroit, and said recruit falls in love with another university. All seems lost.

-Williams feasts his eyes on Harrison Barnes, and his heart flutters all over again.

Williams’ message: It’s not OK for men to cry! Regardless of how grim the past has been, pick your head up and look toward tonight!

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The story: Fresh out of the womb, a baby boy seems oddly old. As things unfold, everyone sees that he is aging backwards.

-The 2009-10 Tar Heels are born. They’re young, but somehow their No. 6 preseason ranking makes them seem older.

-They keep winning, and their curious case turns heads after a convincing win against then-No. 9 Michigan State.

-Then, the next game, something doesn’t seem right. UNC loses to Kentucky, and things become obvious, as the Tar Heels look younger and younger.

Williams’ message: It doesn’t matter whether we’re going forward or backward. We’ve got to hit our prime sometime!

    The Hangover

The story: The guys live one night on top of the world, then spend the next day piecing it all together.

-It seems like yesterday that the Tar Heels were cutting down the nets. A party like no other ensues. They wake up this year wondering what happened.

-Tigers startle them. Georgia Tech knocks their teeth out. Former heavyweight Wake Forest lands an uppercut right on their chin.

-Team is so young that: “None of us could remember anything from last night. Remember?”

Williams’ message: Wait … I just remembered that I have our last five games against the Wolfpack on tape!

Looks like we were 5-0 in those games and that we outscored NCSU by 90 overall!

    UNC vs. N.C. State

NCSU looked pretty good against Duke last week. Can they do the same to the Heels?

    Kentucky Diatribe

    (pic from Kentucky.com)

    Kentucky.

Are there really any worse fans than those who support Big Blue? ………..Well, I can think of a few.

But anyway, a link tweeted by Adam Lucas  has me fuming this morning. A light snow is falling in Lexington, but it was already a cold place before that. It’s not that they don’t have the history to be as boisterous as they are, it’s that they don’t have any respect for any other program. They are too good for your team who has less wins than them, too good for your team that has less championships and too good to hire a respectable coach. For UK, the ends justify the means. Thing is this time, those ends (wins) might not eventually be counted. It’s a theory known as “Cali-vacate-ology.”

Fine. It’s their choice. But please don’t go crying when your wins record disappears (UNC has 1,991, UK 1,995). Don’t get mad when Roy Williams makes UNC the team with the second-most national titles (not that they had any respect for UCLA anyway). And certainly don’t get mad when Easy Ed and company wipe the floor with you in Rupp today.

I hope the snow keeps falling. It’s gonna be a long, cold afternoon.

UNC Takes on Michigan State in ACC-Big 10 Challenge

    (pic from Edthesportsfan.com)

Tonight begins what could be the toughest two weeks of the Tar Heels’ season. The defending champs are taking on the team they ousted for the title just eight months ago. The headlines back on that glorious April day: “A Legacy Fulfilled” – DTH and “High Five” – Durham Herald Sun, among others.

The headlines might be a little different tomorrow as the Spartans are the favorites favored about equally tonight, but the test could prove to be a turning point for the Heels. Win or lose, I can’t see the impact of tonight’s result being negative. A win could start a wave of confidence that helps the Heels plow through December. A loss would identify the main weaknesses in a young team, preparing them for their other Top 10 match-ups this month and getting them ready for the ACC season.

Some think we’ll win, others think we’ll lose. (No link for the lose crowd. After all, who actually picks the Heels to lose?)

BTW that was the first time I’ve ever used the term “we” when talking about Carolina on this blog. I’ve tried staying away from it, but c’mon. You know you say it, too.

    Here’s a Rafters-worthy prediction:

The Heels bigs hassle the tiny Spartans side-to-side and up and down the court. MSU shoots a horrible percentage while Big Z, Easy Ed and damn-he-needs-a-sweet-nickname Deon Thompson corral the boards and teasingly hold the ball above their heads. John Henson, who is also in need of a sick nombre, will have a breakout game and play 20 minutes, scoring 20 points. LD will teach Kalin Lucas to respect the wood — as Lucas will be on the floor after his ankles get broken so many times — and UNC will win by 15.
