    Catching up

Is it finally over? By that I mean the sick feeling in your stomach re: the most recent NCAA championship. Mine has finally subsided. So might as well cure the subsequent blogging hangover by getting back at it eh?

What better way to get over a case of the “I-can’t-believe-Gordon-Hayward-missed-that-shot”s than by looking forward to next year. Now that the NBA draft deadline has passed, we know that Easy Ed will be leaving us for bigger and better things. Can’t really blame him. He’s a projected lottery pick depending on how the draft day moves go, and he stands to lose a lot of money by staying in college for another year with all that lockout business.

So then there’s Harrison Barnes. The No. 1 recruit in the country is coming in with some highly touted classmates to add some more youth to what is already going to be a young team. But wait! Why not make it even younger?

Over the past few days it’s come to light that James McAdoo, nephew of former Tar Heel and NBA Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo, and a Top 5 recruit in the class of 2011, might just pull an Andre Dawkins and come to UNC next year with Barnes and Co. Read this piece on SI.com and it will make you feel all warm and giddy inside. Here’s a throwback of ol’ Bob, sorry about the watermark. Only image I could find in a Heels uni.

Well if you read that article, it’s made clear by James McAdoo’s father that James came up with the idea once the Wear twins transferred. That gave me some piece of mind. I was afraid that Roy might have been pulling a Coach K. As in last year when Dawkins came to Duke as a 17-year-old. I never read any stories on him – why woud I? – but after Elliot Williams transferred I was sure it was K figuring out some way to bolster his roster. Unfortunately whoever initiated the Dawkins early graduation talks, it worked out for them, but that’s beside the point.

The other move I’m not sure we’ve covered here on the Rafters is the transfer of Justin Knox from Alabama. This should be a valuable pick-up. If he can put up his numbers from the SEC a year ago (6.3 pts., 3.7 rebs) that will be gravy. It’d be about equal to what two Wears were giving us, so even trade.

I don’t think the McAdoo Move would alter the potential starting lineup for next season, nor will the Knox pickup.  At the beginning, I’m guessing Drew, Strickland, Graves, Henson, Zeller, with the expectation that Barnes will be starting by the ACC season.

The transfers and early graduations would give us a very solid bench, however, with McAdoo and Knox spelling Henson and Zeller. Graves and Barnes wouldn’t be forced to play much post, and Reggie Bullock and Kendall Marshall will provide the guards with respite.

Come to think of it, that would give the Heels exactly 10 players who would likely see minutes — one sub for each starter.

And if they start playing anything like last year, that would come in handy when Roy needs to make one of his full line-up substitutions.

Vote for Marvin in new NBA Jam game!!

It would be an understatement to say I’ve spent many hours of my life playing NBA Jam Tournament Edition on Super Nintendo. When you add it all up, days or perhaps weeks is probably more accurate.

I’m not sure how this has slipped past me for so long, but a new, YES NEW, NBA Jam game is being released by EA Sports this fall. It even sticks to the (sort of) 2-D graphics of the original!

And you can vote for the three-person rosters to represent each team. This week you can vote for the Atlanta Hawks, whose potential roster could include former Heel Marvin Williams. So GO VOTE FOR MARVIN.

Where the Heel did you go, Raymond Felton?

Those of you that watch Sportscenter (one word or two?) probably know very well where Raymond Felton is because he’s taking names in the NBA. As point guard for the Charlotte Bobcats, Ray has been getting some great compliments from his coach, Larry Brown. Not an easy task, considering Brown is known to be one of the toughest coaches on points guards in the game.

Felton has the squad playing pretty well. Charlotte just beat a very good Denver Nuggets team, against another former UNC PG Ty Lawson no less. The Bobcats have won six of their last eight games. Needless to say, one of those came when they visited the Wizards Nov. 28. Rafters blogger Matt and I made our way to the Verizon Center to catch the game and took some super sweet video of our boy Felton from our “upgraded” seats in the lower level.  So please, do check it out below:

Look closely and you’ll see another former Tar Heel, Brendan Haywood, in that second video. And now, the highlight of the Wizards’ night!……

    Ty Lawson Posterizes

We can’t get enough Ty Lawson here at The Rafters. Poor seven-footer D.J. Mbenga of the L.A. Lakers got more than enough Ty Lawson on Friday night.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOMOkZYq3jY]

Unreal. What might be even better is how the dunk blew the roof off the Pepsi Center. Ty’s teammates love the kid, and the Denver Post published two articles over the weekend that include more of the praise the rookie has been garnering almost as fast as he can run from baseline to baseline. In one article, Ty’s all-star teammates share their shock and awe at his funknasty dunk:

Yet, all the Nuggets wanted to talk about afterward was rookie Ty Lawson’s first NBA dunk, when the 5-foot-11 guard skied past 7-footer D.J. Mbenga and 6-9 forward Josh Powell for the slam as he was hammered to the floor for a three-point play that had his teammates bolting from their seats and celebrating with the crowd as if they had won just the West.

“That was nasty,” Anthony said. “A 5-footer against two 7-footers.”

    “That was incredible,” Billups said.

The other article, also by Arnie Stapleton, gushes with the excitement and satisfaction that the Nuggets have in regards to drafting Ty. His valuable experience in the up-and-down, high-scoring Carolina system is mentioned several times, with UNC alumnus Gerge Karl adding, “Well, when Roy Williams whispers to you that he’s the best point guard he’s ever coached—I mean, he’s had a few good point guards.”

    Roy’s best? I believe it.

    It's the Law, son.

    tylawnuggest

Ty Lawson has been getting some early praise in his rookie NBA season, not the least of which is coming from Denver Nuggets teammate, Kenyon Martin:

“The kid is able to play,” Martin said of Denver’s rookie guard. “I played with Jason Kidd, man. Moving that ball, it was unbelievable. (Lawson’s) strength is getting the ball up the court, getting into the gaps, making plays.”

K-Mart referred to Lawson’s quickness as “that speed.” Like you say about the weather or something.

It’s not that hot out, but that humidity!

We knew it already, but looks like NBA teams are realizing what it means to get the Ty treatment.

Pacers vs. Wizards: Tar Heels in the News

The Pacers/Wizards game last night provided lots of press for former Tar Heels. Tyler Hansbrough impressed in his NBA debut and fellow retired-jersey-mate Antawn Jamison popped into the papers without playing a minute.

It’s Saturday and I’m lazy, so here’s a critique of Hansbrough’s Subaru commercial. **Update** This is actually about Hansbrough’s Acura commercial. It’s basically the same as the Subaru, but just a different brand. So count it, there are TWO Hansbrough WOW! commercials out there.

    Tyler Hansbrough makes NBA debut

    Wizards Pacers Basketball

Tyler finally made his NBA debut against the Washington Wizards and put up a pretty good and very Tyler-esque stat line:

14 points in 13 minutes, 3 for 7 from the field and 7 for 10 from the foul line. He also had five rebounds and dove into the crowd once while chasing a loose ball.

His coach and teammates also had some real nice things to say about him.

Pacers coach Jim O’Brien: “A little rusty in a lot of areas, but he’s going to be in the attack mode at the offense and defensive end, he’s going to go after every rebound. I’m very pleased with him. I think he’s going to be a heck of an NBA player.”

Teammate Danny Granger: “He brings that intensity, kind of that mad-dog intensity. I like to refer to him as a pitbull on the loose. He’s just attacking all over the place, and that’s the mentality you need.”

The whole game wrap-up revolves around Tyler’s debut and has a nice anecdote about Antawn Jamison yelling at Tyler from the Washington bench.

Oh yeah, the Pacers won 102-86.

Harrison Barnes Will Announce School Choice

    The waiting is almost over.

The No. 1 recruit in the class of 2010, Harrison Barnes, will make his choice of college — or “university of the people,” whichever — public next week. Hopefully his “public” decision will be the “public” choice. It’s been pretty well documented that his two leading contenders are UNC and Duke.

In my opinion, Barnes is the quintessential Carolina kid. He  maintains a good GPA and is ultra-talented. He seems grounded (He kept Iowa in his top schools with the likes of UNC, Duke, Kansas, Oklahoma to be close to home), which is a great reason to join the Carolina basketball family. He wants to play in the NBA, but he recognizes the importance of an education, and may not necessarily leave after one year — though this kid is definitely of the breed that could and might.

The downside to being a perfect fit for Carolina? That kind of fit is pretty good for Duke as well: good school, family-ish (clique-ish?) with a tight community surrounding the basketball program.

According to the blog linked above, his announcement will be live on ESPN. (Commence biting nails)

J.J. Redick releasing a rap album?

So, this blog has turned into as much of a lampoon on Dook basketball as it has an update on UNC’s own team, but this has to be mentioned.

Apparently Magic guard JJ Redick is going to drop a single and an album with a hip-hop “super group” sometime soon. He says in the article that since all the members “pretty much have a full time job” that they hope the single will be out by the end of the year. I assume this means that the group will include other basketball players.

The group does not have a name as of yet.

Also, the single will be called “Waste Management.” I don’t know what that means and JJ’s explanation doesn’t clear it up: “The chorus has been written and the first verse and the direction we’re heading on the song has to deal with ‘waste management.”

I thought JJ was a poet? When did he turn to rhymes.

George Karl calls Ty Lawson "Whiz Kid"

    Nuggets Lawson Basketball

Here’s an article from the Nugget’s website with coach and UNC alum George Karl referring to Ty as essentially and NBA protege who, even as a rookie, “doesn’t make mistakes.”

    More quotes from the article.

Karl: “The downside to playing young guys is it usually leads to mistakes. This rookie doesn’t make mistakes.”

Chauncey Billups: “A lot of rookies when they make good plays, you didn’t even have to see the play. You know what happened because they’re just so emotional and they’re running back and they’re so happy. (Lawson’s) got a great composure. He stays even-keeled the whole time, which I love. It’s something that reminds me of myself. I love playing with Ty. He’s earned his spot with us.”
