Hubert Davis: Alumnus of the Year

On College Game Day this morning, let it be known that Hubert Davis, UNC Class of 1992, picked the Tar Heels to beat Duke while seated at half court of Hansbrough Cameron Indoor Stadium. While all the other commentators chose favored Duke, Mr. Davis exemplified the true spirit of the greatest rivalry in sports, and picked his alma mater. His colleague, Bobby Knight, then proposed that he receive the “alumni of the year award,” and so we are justly giving it to Mr. Davis. This is not the first time Mr. Davis has upheld his loyalty to the University of North Carolina, as evidenced in the hidden-camera video below. It is not a commercial like some might think.

Although, Jay, you are normally a voice of reason and valuable insight, today is different. Eat it, Bilas. And so for Mr. Davis’ body of work as a full-bore Carolina supporter, even in the face of the Cameron Crazies, he shall be presented with this most prestigious award. The dozens, nay, hundreds of people who will see this will surely understand the humongous honor.

Congratulate yourself, Hubert Davis. You are The Rafters’ Alumnus of the Year.

Hansbrough jersey to be retired February 10 at Duke game

UNC announced today that Tyler’s jersey will be raised into the rafters on February 10 during the home Duke game.

That was quick. Not that he doesn’t deserve it but usually we’re to wait before honoring our greats. The three members of the 2005 team that made it to eternal glory were not raised until two years after their departure if memory serves correct. Granted none were as well decorated during their times at UNC as Tyler.

I wonder when Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington will be honored, as both are scheduled to also get the jersey treatment. Same for George Lynch, who under new guidelines will also be raised.

Where the Heel Did You Go? Jackie Manuel

This is a segment I have been thinking about starting for a while now, and when I saw this article today I thought, “Why not today?”

Let’s all take a trip down memory lane and avoid as many cliches as possible.  The year was 2005 and UNC had just won Roy Williams his first NCAA championship. That June, UNC would make history with four players selected in the first 14 picks of the NBA draft and one more being picked in the second round. One notable exception from that list of draftees was shutdown man Jackie Manuel.

Jackie has forgone the usual route of playing oversees and now plays with the Erie BayHawks of the NBA D-League.

Last season Jackie averaged 9.1 points and 7.1 rebounds and shot 47.9 percent from the field as a starter.

Over the off-season Jackie has changed up his diet, added close to 20 pounds of muscle and worked to improve his shooting touch. He was an abysmal 27.3 percent from beyond the arc and 59.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Here’s to you Jackie, good luck in Erie and remember you’ll always have a possee in Chapel Hill.

    It's the Law, son.

    tylawnuggest

Ty Lawson has been getting some early praise in his rookie NBA season, not the least of which is coming from Denver Nuggets teammate, Kenyon Martin:

“The kid is able to play,” Martin said of Denver’s rookie guard. “I played with Jason Kidd, man. Moving that ball, it was unbelievable. (Lawson’s) strength is getting the ball up the court, getting into the gaps, making plays.”

K-Mart referred to Lawson’s quickness as “that speed.” Like you say about the weather or something.

It’s not that hot out, but that humidity!

We knew it already, but looks like NBA teams are realizing what it means to get the Ty treatment.

George Karl calls Ty Lawson "Whiz Kid"

    Nuggets Lawson Basketball

Here’s an article from the Nugget’s website with coach and UNC alum George Karl referring to Ty as essentially and NBA protege who, even as a rookie, “doesn’t make mistakes.”

    More quotes from the article.

Karl: “The downside to playing young guys is it usually leads to mistakes. This rookie doesn’t make mistakes.”

Chauncey Billups: “A lot of rookies when they make good plays, you didn’t even have to see the play. You know what happened because they’re just so emotional and they’re running back and they’re so happy. (Lawson’s) got a great composure. He stays even-keeled the whole time, which I love. It’s something that reminds me of myself. I love playing with Ty. He’s earned his spot with us.”
