It’s Got To Be The Shoes – UNC Men’s Basketball Team Shoes Pt. III

If you missed the mid-season review of the kicks the team was wearing, check here. But the other day a new Jordan Brand silhouette popped up on the internets and reminded me that I hadn’t finished the rest of the season’s shoe sightings. See, the new Jordan shoe is nostalgically referred to as the “Carmichael,” and since UNC has a penchant for wearing Jordan Brand footwear I’ve deduced that we’ll probably be spotting this shoe next year in a nice Carolina blue colorway.

Anyways, enough about possible shoes for next season. Let’s run back through last season’s games, picking up with the match against Albany. Before we do though, here are the shoes that were seen on the court this past season:

    Jumpman Hallowed Ground

    Jumpman Ol’ School III

    Jordan 16.5

    Jordan 2.5

    Jordan 2009

    Jordan 12

    Jordan 12.5

    Jordan 2010

    Jordan 10

    Jumpman Icons

    Nike Hyperize

    Nike Hyperdunk

    Nike Kobe IV

    Now the players:

Larry Drew II: Larry continued to sport the Jordan 2.5 for the Albany, College of Charleston and Virginia Tech games, but switched to the Jordan 16.5 from the Clemson game on through the rest of the season, and magic NIT run. With the exception being the Florida State game, Jordan Brand 25th Anniversary in which he wore the silver Jordan 2010.

Marcus Ginyard: Marcus had bucked the UNC trend early in the season by wearing the Nike Hyperize, which he continued to do through the Dook home game, seen here. After that he went with the Jordan 12Rising Sunwhich some other players had already been wearing.

David Wear: The freshman changed up his footwear several times early in the season and continued to do so for the later half. For Albany and College of Charleston he was still in the Jumpman Ol’ School III. Starting with Clemson he went with the Jordan 12 until the NC State home game when he started wearing the Jumpman Icons before going down for the season.

Deon Thompson: Deon definitely took advantage of the shoe situation, as it was never a given what he’d be wearing. For Albany he showed up in the Jordan 16.5, which he also wore at C of C. Against Va. Tech and Clemson he showed up with a colorway of the Kobe IV that I don’t believe has surfaced anywhere else, although it is similar to the Minneapolis Lakers colorway that did come out. For Ga. Tech and Wake he was back in the Hallowed Ground before switching back to the Kobe IV for NC StateVirginiaVa. Tech and the 2nd half against Dook at home. Yep, the 2nd half. Deon wore the Jordan 12 in the first half. Back in the Kobe IV for NC StateGa. Tech and Boston College. Number 21 took part in the 25th Anniversary schtick but was back with Kobe against Wake. For the first time of the season, the Jordan 10 made an appearance on Senior Night and stayed for Dook before being replaced by the Hallowed Ground and Kobe IV for the postseason.

Ed Davis: Easy Ed also switched up his flow a couple times before his season ended. He wore the Jumpman Pro for AlbanyC of CVa. TechClemsonGa. Tech, and NC State. Against Virginia it was the Jordan 16.5 but the Pro was back for the 2nd Va. Tech outing, Maryland and Dook.

Dexter Strickland: Maybe the person that most changed shoes, Dexter was wearing the Jordan 12 for Albany, C of C, Va. Tech, Clemson, Ga. Tech and Wake. The Hallowed Ground made a reappearance for NC StateVirginia and Va. Tech. Up in the snow at Maryland, Dex tried to camouflage his feet with the Jordan 12 and he wore it again against Dook. NC State brought out the Icons, as did Ga. Tech, Wake, Miami, Dook, Ga. Tech, Mississippi State, Rhode Island and Dayton. In the NIT though, Dex did wear the Jordan 12 against W&M and the Jordan 16.5 against UAB. And, of course, Dex took part in celebration Jordan.

John Henson: Although John did surprise me with his Hyperize choice, he settled into a couple shoes he wore for the rest of the season. Against Albany, C of C, Va. Tech, Clemson, Ga. Tech and Wake. The Hallowed Grounds came out against NC State, Virginia, Va. Tech, Dook, NC State, Ga. Tech, Boston College, Wake, Miami, Dook, Ga. Tech and the run to the NIT final. John wore the silver Jordan 2010s as well.

Will Graves: I rescind my previous statement that Dexter wore the most shoes. Will was all over the place. Against Va. Tech he was wearing those Jordan/Jumpmans that I don’t know the model, which he also wore against Clemson, Ga. Tech and Wake. Then the Jumpman Pro was out for NC State and the 2nd half of Virginia. The first half saw the Jordan 16.5. The first half at Va. Tech had the Jumpman Pro while the 2nd half had the mysterious Jordan. It was the Jumpman Pro again for Dook at home, NC State and Ga. Tech. BC was the no name shoe and FSU got the Jordan 16.5, as did Wake, MiamiDook, Ga. Tech, W&M, Mississippi State, UAB, Rhode Island and Dayton.

Tyler Zeller: Tyler was one of the ones that picked a shoe and stuck with it. Z wore the Jordan 16.5 against Albany, C of C and Va. Tech. Upon his return against FSU, Tyler picked up the Jumpman Icons and didn’t look back for the rest of the short season.

Travis Wear: Travis also had a short rotation of shoes. For Albany and C of C he wore the Jumpman Pro before switching to the Jordan 12 for Va. Tech, Clemson, Ga. Tech, WakeNC State and Virginia. At Va. Tech T-Wear brought the Jumpman Pro out but was in the Jumpman Icons against Wake and for the remainder of the season and postseason.

Leslie McDonald: Like some of his freshman teammates, Leslie was quick to change up the shoes. Against Albany and C of C he was in the Jumpman Ol’ School III. He switched to the Jordan 12 for Va. Tech, Clemson, Ga. TechWake and NC State before a brief return to the Ol’ School III. Starting with the home game with NC State, Leslie balled in the Jumpman Icons until FSU when he went on a streak of several games in the silver Jordan 2010. After the ACC tourny he stayed with the Jumpman Icons until the NIT weekend in MSG where he wore the Jordan 12.

Justin Watts: Didn’t get as much PT after the ACC season started, but was in the Jordan 16.5 for C of C, Jumpman Hallowed Ground for Wake and Virginia, and the 16.5 against Mississippi State and Rhode Island.

Marc Campbell rocked the Jordan 2.5, James Gallagher had the Jumpman Icons, Thomas Thornton was about the Jumpman Hallowed Ground and Terrenece Petree wore both the Jordan 16.5 and Jumpman Icons.

Ah, there it goes. The wrap-up of the 2009-2010 UNC Men’s Basketball shoes. For the whole gallery, look here.

    ACC Power Rankings – Uni-edition – Jan. 20, 2010

We polled all the Rafters bloggers to see who is looking good in the ACC this week. If you check this poll throughout the season, you’ll notice a certain consistency at the No. 1 position. It’s not our job to tout other teams who might have had a better week than Carolina, it’s our job to tell you why, week after week, UNC is the best team in the conference. If you know a reason why the Heels are No. 1, send it to us at editors@raftersblog.com.

Our little disclaimer above takes a very literal turn this week, as yet again, the Heels are No. 1!

You might have been worried that we wouldn’t be able to justify it this time. Wrong. Have a little faith. You can still talk junk to Clemson, even after that 19-point drubbing. They wear purple and orange. Child, please. Here’s a web album of all the inferior unis that attempt to challenge Carolina in the conference.

    1. North Carolina (1-2) – No one can touch the blue set on the road. This is easily the best uniform in the ACC, if not the country. The argyle up the side adds class, and somehow allows UNC to wear a color that could easily be used wrong with style. The white ones ain’t bad either, and then there’s the sick retros — all Jordan brand by the way. We could go on.

    2. Florida State (2-2) – At first glance, you might thing FSU is rockin’ a boring, maroon set with white and gold stripes down the side. But look again, that’s a feather going the length of the jersey and onto the shorts. Nice touch.

    3. Virginia (3-0) - UVa gets a little bump because of their record, but their unis ain’t hurtin. Pretty good meld of classic and contemporary design. For the amount of crap some teams put on uniforms now, this isn’t half bad.

    4. Virginia Tech (1-2) - We love the “Hokies” on the front, even if it is just a castrated turkey, but really hate the not-as-nice-as-Texas’ orange.

    5. Georgia Tech (3-2) - GT is here at No. 5 because they, too, are wearing throwbacks this year. Problem is, they don’t look that much different than their current jerseys. Not to mention these aren’t throwbacks to a championship team, they’re throwbacks to an Elite 8 team.

    6. Wake Forest (2-2) – Lumped in here with Ga. Tech because, well, they wear the same colors, and they’re colors that remind us of an old lady in church.

    7. Boston College (2-3) - BC climbs out of the basement of the rankings this week, not because they have sweet jerseys or a good record, but because there’s nothing to like or dislike about those unis.

    8. N.C. State (1-3) - Now we get to the bottom feeders of the league. State lands at No. 8 because even their own fans dislike their court wear. As Rafters blogger Benn Wineka put it, they’re  ”too bland to even be ‘classic.’”

    9. Miami (1-4) - The ‘Canes have been losing and looking bad while doing it. They rock the epitome of useless stripes down the side of their uniforms. They should take note from their fellow Floridians FSU and accent those jerseys with something less cliche.

    10. Clemson (3-2) - There’s so much potential to use a sweet paw print logo on Clemson’s sets, but instead they decide to waste it by wearing purple and orange. Let it sink in……………..purple…………..and orange.

    11. Maryland (2-1) - Maryland is another with squandered potential. The yellow/black checker from the Maryland state flag could be so cool. It’s almost used well on the home whites, but Benn reminded us that their yellows are unforgivable.

    12. Duke (3-1) - We’ve been waiting to put the Durhamites down here for a while, and this week’s theme provided the perfect opportunity. You remember when Duke had some pretty classic-looking jerseys and the rivalry match-ups with UNC just reeked of tradition?

Per usual, the Dukies decide to ruin everything. In homage to their “famed” Gothic architecture, they are wearing what looks like a circuit board on their backs this year. And for a while now, they’ve switched the white out of their away blues (like Grant Hill is wearing above) to black, and “accented” that with black shoes. Black shoes, guys, really? Guess they’ve come to embrace their role, which is of course,  pure evil.

It’s Got To Be The Shoes – UNC Men’s Basketball Team Shoes Pt. II

About a month and a half ago I ran a post on the shoes UNC basketball players had worn up to that point in the season. That was only through the first two games of the season, plus the exhibition game. In the time since, the Heels have rolled out a bevy of new styles and changed up their footwear choices.

First off, a quick guide to the shoes that have been worn this season by at least one Tar Heel:

    Jumpman Hallowed Ground

    Jumpman Ol’ School III

    Jordan 16.5

    Jordan 2.5

    Jordan 2009

    Jordan 12

    Jordan 12.5

    Nike Hyperize

    Nike Hyperdunk

    Now the players:

Larry Drew II: Larry has kept it simple and worn the Jordan 2.5 all season. The 2.5 was a big shoe last season and has carried over for Larry this season.

Marcus Ginyard: I was surprised when Marcus broke the mold and went outside the Jordan or Jumpman brands and decided to wear the Nike Hyperize. The Hyperize is being worn by about every college team outfitted by Nike as it comes in a wide selection of colors, but the Carolina blue colorway has only been seen one other place to my knowledge.

David Wear: I was not able to find photographic evidence of David’s shoes from the beginning of the season, but I am 95 percent sure it was the Jumpman Pro. David was one of the first, however, the wear the Jordan 16.5 during the Heels MSG outing. David continued wearing the 16.5 for several games, but during the last four has worn the Jordan Ol’ School III, including his first collegiate start against Marshall and last night’s game against Rutgers.

Deon Thompson: So far, Deon has been rotating three shoes. He began the season in the Jumpman Pro, which was a holdover from last season although he did not wear it during the National Championship game[he wore the Jordan 2.5]. He then switched over to the Jumpman Hallowed Ground for games against Gardner-Webb, Nevada and Kentucky before wearing the Jumpman Ol’ School III at Cowboys Stadium against Texas. Deon reverted to the Jumpman Hallowed Ground for the Marshall game but then broke out the Jordan 16.5 last night.

Ed Davis: Ed has swtiched his flavor up a couple times throughout the short season. In the exhibition and opener he was seen in the Jumpman Pro but brought out the Jordan 2009 for the bright lights at MSG. This seems to be a trend as for games against Kentucky and Texas, Easy Ed also wore the more flashy Jordan 2009s. I may be looking too far into the importance of the game and correlation of the shoe because the 2009 does have more blue in it which would go better with the away uniforms that the team has also worn for each of those games. For games with Presbyterian, Marshall and Rutgers, Ed was back in the Jumpman Pro. I thought Ed had worn the Jordan 16.5 before but I have no evidence of that.

Dexter Strickland: Even though he is only a freshman, Dexter has not been shy to take advantage of the shoe situation. Early in the season Dexter was wearing the Jumpman Hallowed Ground but by Gardner-Webb was onto the Jordan 16.5. Following Marcus’ footsteps, Dexter bucked the trend hard and wore the Nike Hyperdunk in games against Nevada and Michigan State, further confusing at least me when the colorway was navy and white, not a bit of Carolina blue in it. At Kentucky he was back to the Jordan 16.5 before switching to the Jordan 12 “Rising Sun” colorway for games with Texas, Marshall and Rutgers. I think I remember someone calling that earlier this season.

John Henson: Sticking with freshman, John Henson hasn’t had quite as much variety as his counterpart but did offer a surprise as of late. This whole season John has been sporting the Jumpman Hallowed Ground, which we have photos from NCCU and Texas, though I can promise he was wearing them throughout. For Marshall and last night’s Rutgers game he brought out the Nike Hyperize in the same colorway that Marcus wears.

Will Graves: Mr. Graves stumped me with his shoe choice for the beginning of the season. Against FIU through Valpo, Will was wearing some member of the Jumpman or Jordan brand that I can’t figure out. Will and Ed must talk about their shoes because in the games that Ed has worn the 2009s – MSG, Kentucky, Texas - Will has also worn them. Again it may have something to do with the uniforms though. Otherwise, Will has somewhat settled on the Jumpman Hallowed Grounds as his go-to as he has worn them against Gardner-Webb, Marshall and Rutgers.

Tyler Zeller: Tyler, who wore the Jumpman Pro for most of last year, has switched between the Jumpman Ol’ School III and Jordan 16.5 this season. Early in the season Z was sporting the Jumpman Ol’ School III, like he did here against FIU and NCCU. Otherwise from about Gardner-Webb onward he has been wearing the Jordan 16.5, including against KentuckyMarshall and last night.

Travis Wear: Travis was spotted sporting the Jumpman Ol’ School III in the exhibition against Belmont Abbey but has since switched to the Jumpman Pro which he’s worn in most game this season, including, NCCU, Gardner-Webb and Rutgers.

Justin Watts: For most of this season Justin had been rocking the Jumpman Hallowed Ground. Last night against Rutgers, however, Justin was the first Tar Heel to wear the Jordan 12.5 out on the court. Nice change up.

Leslie McDonald: All season Leslie has worn the Jumpman Ol’  School. Here he is against NCCU, Presbyterian, Texas,  Marshall and Rutgers. Here he is doing the Danny Green in pregame.

Marc Campbell: When Campbell has been in the game he’s been seen in the Jordan 2.5.

Terrence Petree: Last but not least, Mr. Petree who was spotted in the Jumpman Pro.

Check out the whole gallery here.

    UNC Men's Basketball Team Shoes

Besides Chuck Taylor, there is no name more synonymous with footwear than Michael Jordan.

Lucky for UNC, Jordan is an alum and the men’s basketball team is outfitted with the best Nike and Jordan Brand gear there is. The team has their pick at which shoes they want to wear each season, but there’s always two that most of the team rocks through the season. This year there’s three: the Jordan Jumpman Pro, Jordan Hallowed Ground and Jordan Ol’ School III.

Jordan-Ol-School-III We’ll start with the Ol’ School III. As you can see, there are several colorways for these shoes, but you’ll notice the Carolina blue one is extra special with an argyle trim along the sole. So far this year Tyler Zeller, T. Wear and Leslie McDonald have been spotted wearing these.

    tylerzellershoes

    twearshoesexhibition

    [T.Wear to right of screen]

    twearshoes

    [McDonald to left of screen]

As you can see though in the above picture, T. Wear has switched to wearing the Jumpman Pro, like his brother David, since the exhibition. Interestingly, Zeller wore the Jumpman Pros last season also but switched this season.

    tylerzellershoes2So, onto the Jumpman Pro.

    P1020195

These are a holdover from last year, but some of the team members are still wearing them. Deon Thompson, T. Wear, D. Wear and Ed Davis are holding strong in the kicks. Deon and Ed did not wear these shoes last season.

    deonshoeseddavisshoes

The UNC Player Editions of the Jordan Hallowed Ground have caught favor with a couple of the underclassmen.

jordan-hallowed-groundAmong the Tar Heels, John Henson, Dexter Strickland and Justin Watts have been wearing the shoes.

    hensonshoesstricklandshoes2wattsshoes2Now for the outliers.

Larry Drew II has gone with some of the Jordan “remixes,” an update on the orignal Jordan IIs. Drew II wears the Jordan 2.5

    jordan-2.5-unc-sample-1drewshoes

The one that has stumped me so far is Marcus Ginyard. A definite benefit of going to Carolina is the exclusive Jordans. Ginyard, however, has opted to go outside of the Jordan Brand to Nike and wear the Hyperize. While I’ve never seen this colorway anywhere else, the Hyperize is favored by many professionals and is a very team oriented shoe that will probably be seen a lot this season, much like the Hyperdunk was last season.

    ginyardshoes2

The one I can’t seem to put a finger on is the renegade Will Graves. I know he is wearing a pair that is within the Jordan Brand, I just don’t know what it is.

    willgravesshoeswillgravesshoes3Any ideas?

Now while most players will stick with the same shoe throughout the season some will experiment, as shown by T. Wear. Come tournament time, it’s a different story. Last year UNC came out with everything from the Lebron James line on Ty Lawson to Deron Williams’ signature shoes on Wayne Ellington, making it very strange to see Wayne with a number 8 on his shoe.

    57146173

5714615457146193Deon and Danny Green are seen in both those pictures in the Jordan 2.5

In case you’re wondering, Tyler Hansbrough also wore the Jordan 2.5 last year.

    57146778

I’ll keep you updated on shoes developments throughout the season.

University Central Florida loses Adidas Sponsorship after Marcus Jordan wears Jordans

    (Marcus wearing Jordan XII)

If any had heard about this whole thing, you may have seen this coming.

Citing the “honor” that his family has and goes along with wearing them, Marcus Jordan, son of Micahel and UCF freshman guard, wore a pair of Jordan Brand shoes during Wednesday night’s exhibition win over St. Leo.

Problem is, UCF is an Adidas supplied campus and because of Jordan is withdrawing their deal with the school. The deal was set to expire in June.

I think the bigger problem here is looking at young Jordan’s stat line: 23 minutes, 1 point, 0-3 from the field, but 3 steals.

Anyways, how can you fault Marcus, the kid grew up receiving custom Jordan sneakers.

Think Mike steps in and saves the school with exclusive Jordan Brand deal?
