Poll Position Week 4: UNC drops to No. 5
This was to be expected after a loss. Naturally, if a team loses they go down in the polls. The story is no different for the Tar Heels today, as they fell to No. 5 in both national polls.
The teams that are now ranked higher are all deserving, Kentucky, Ohio State, Syracuse and, unfortunately, Duke. All are undefeated and have played some legitimate competition, though some more than others. Syracuse’s early schedule has been a little weak, but again, it’s November and they are undefeated. Carolina is still in the top tier talent-wise, so the voters kept them in the Top 5. Not bad. When you look the rest of the Top 10, it would have felt like a slight to have dropped lower, below Louisville for instance.
Also of note is that UNLV jumped into the Top 25 at No. 18 and No. 20 in the AP and Coaches Polls respectively. They had been receiving votes in previous weeks as they are the frontrunners in the Mountain West, and their win over UNC helped them vault into the rankings.
It will be interesting to see how both the Heels and UNLV look against Wisconsin, as both teams play the Badgers in nonconference games.
