Duke Basketball Presents Great Moments in Cinematic History. Really!?
There really are no words for this:
I don’t know where to start, but my paranoia tells me this is a classic move (or attempt at a move) by Coach K. It’s pretty well known that Late Night with Roy has become an event where players will dance and perform skits, more or less making fools of themselves to kick off the season. The underlying theme of Late Night, I think, is that the players generally get along, love being together and love being on the team. I haven’t necessarily ever gotten that vibe from Durham, not that I’ve been looking. When I think of Duke, I think of a strict dictatorship, one where you must shoot 1,000 three-pointers at every practice, flop on the ground in agony every time you’re driven upon and — most importantly — put on your game face.
I think K agreed to let his players be in this video because he wants to portray a more congenial atmosphere among his team. “We’re just as fun-loving as Carolina!” If you check out this ESPN video of various Midnight Madness events, you’ll notice that the Devils’ is particularly bland compared to others. “Oh this is fun!” says the commentator when the Blue Devil “surfs” over some students.
This effort with the help of the Duke Improv group falls short in my opinion. The Titanic scene? That’s all I’m saying. But again, I’m just paranoid right?
